Anti-Oppressive Practices - Hayley Francis Cann & Priya Shah

*Can only attend pre-conference workshop if registered for entire workshop.

As music therapists, we strive to support the development, health, and wellbeing of our clients. In doing so, we also have a moral and ethical responsibility to challenge inequality and disadvantage. In this workshop we will engage in dialogue about our experiences in relation to privilege and oppression, and begin to consider our role as clinicians in challenging oppression and promoting change. The unfortunate killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and many other Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) individuals has catapulted the conversation of racism, discrimination, and oppression into the limelight. Now, more than ever, we need to engage in difficult conversations and build our knowledge of anti-oppressive practices. This workshop will provide opportunities to gain an introductory understanding of anti-oppressive vocabulary, identify bias and privilege, develop tools for practicing within an anti-oppressive frameworkcreate personal goals, and engage in self-reflection.

Presentation Descriptions:

Telehealth Music Therapy for Autistic Individuals: Benefits and Disadvantages

Telehealth music therapy with persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has benefits and disadvantages, yet these are not well understood. This presentation will summarize results from a survey given to music therapists worldwide regarding the benefits and drawbacks of telehealth music therapy for clients with ASD.

Nicole Richards is a neurologic music therapist, and PhD Candidate at the University of Toronto. She studies the impact of music on movement in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Associated Mood and Memory Training: How this Drives Change in the Brain -

Associated Mood and Memory Training (AMMT) is a Neurologic Music Therapy technique for cognitive rehabilitation, memory maintenance, and life review. It targets the function of memory in individuals with diseases resulting in memory impairment. The Rational Science Mediating Model is used to present the scientific information undergirding this technique. The Transformation Design Model is used to illustrate examples of the AMMT technique used with Dementia and Parkinson’s Clients.

Glenda Grace Rogers: I am a mature student who recently graduated from the Masters of Applied Music and Health program at University of Toronto. My background is in voice. I enjoy working with dementia clients, helping them access memories through familiar music.

Custom Musical Instrument Design with Inclusive Instruments -

This presentation will discuss the creation and application of three custom designed musical instruments: the one man band wheelchair, the one-handed guitar, and the immersive vocorder.

Kerry (PhD, RP, MTA, MT-BC) established a private practice in 1990. She served as MTAO President for 6 years. In 2016, Kerry published "A history of the music therapy profession: Diverse practices and concepts."

Ryan studied music at Western University and in Chicago. He designs custom inclusive musical instruments for people with disabilities.
